Merck Serono - easypod(TM) - advanced auto-injector device for growth hormone therapy
Challenge
Merck Serono, a world leader in the field of biotechnology, engaged PDD to design an auto injector for its Growth Hormone Therapy product Saizen¿.
The brief was to simplify therapy administration and management through the automation of as many features as possible and to improve adherence to therapy.
Solution
Through research with parents and children, PDD gained an understanding of the day to day practical and emotional challenges of living with this condition. This drove the development of features aimed at addressing the issues of needle phobia, perception of pain and compliance. Iterative testing of interaction design features throughout development resulted in an intuitive device that gives the user confidence and control of the delivery of their therapy.
Result
Technology with a human touch: the complex automated functions combined with sensitive design detailing creates an easy to use, friendly and non-threatening product which simplifies patients lives and aids therapy compliance. It has been extremely well received, bringing additional benefits to the often sensitive task of administering daily therapy to children and young adults.
