Fresh thinking has never looked (and smelled) so good
The brief
PDD Futures is an initiative we run to investigate and inspire the development of new products and services. We then take our ideas off the page and create solid examples, so our clients not only get to see the future on paper, but hold it in their hands too. What is the future of fragrance? It has changed so little since the glass bottle and atomiser that it’. The SNIF project set out to personalise perfume and enhance the user experience.
What we did
The SNIF can be placed anywhere on your body and the sensors inside will monitor your current condition. From how hot you are to how humid the air is. These readings are then put together and processed to calculate, combine and release optimal levels of scent from 3 separate fragrance reservoirs. It has an ultra-thin profile for comfort and the base material is hypoallergenic with an electro-textile mesh. The fragrance is diffused by controlled evaporation using an ASIC chip, printed battery, heat elements and is regulated by skin contact. An ultrasonic sensor reads the environmental spatial conditions, allowing the controlled release of the fragrance under different situations. For example, in an enclosed environment like your car, emissions will be kept lower. But in a more open environment when the wearer is shopping or clubbing, the fragrance levels can increase. On the inner face, a thin metallic foil sensor measures the humidity, temperature, pH and oxygen levels of the skin. And all sensory information can be processed using a matrix-formed transdermal delivery system, allowing the fragrance to be blended and control-released.
Result
Well, as this is another one of ours all we can say for sure is that this is a product that is genuinely and individually inspired by the wearer. And because SNIF is as much an accessory as it is a fragrance, it has huge branding potential: a fragrance product visible on the body it perfumes.
