Setting a new benchmark in marine radio design

Setting a new benchmark in marine radio design

The brief

Navico had two very distinct challenges in one brief – firstly, to create the world’s first fully waterproof marine radio. Secondly, create three variants on that design – one for commercial, one of leisure and one for safety (GMSS) users.

What we did

From an engineering standpoint, we created a rugged handset capable of being underwater for a year. We did this by utilising micro-porous vent technology coupled with a patented moisture transfer tap. From this base design we then tailored three separate casings each with a totally unique look for the market they were aimed at. Soon after this, the branding route we’d developed extended to all aspects of the company’s corporate image, from brochures to exhibition stands and even premises.

Result

Over a decade on, the Axis radio remains the benchmark for marine VHFs. Specified by the rescue services, it is the model most trusted by clubs, marinas and yachtsmen alike, and was carried on solo around-the world expeditions by both Pete Goss and Ellen MacArthur.
