Vocollect
Challenge
Vocollect, the global leader in voice-directed work, replaces paper and screens with voice commands. In 2003 it saw the opportunity for its next-generation body-worn computer for internet shopping and chose PDD to create its design for a new market.
At the outset, PDD’s human science research established the needs of this new group of users and helped determine the Product Definition Specification. Enhancements such as reduced size, greater versatility, wireless operation and improved battery life were some of the challenges to overcome.
Solution
The curved design of the Talkman®T5 gives it exceptional freedom of mobility to workers in various environments. It is 33% smaller and 45% lighter than its predecessor, is waterproof, vibration-resistant and dust-tight. Its shock-resistant construction and novel connectors protect data memory whilst its elastomeric skin provides scuff protection. It will operate in freezers at -30º as happily as in humid greenhouses.
Result
The Talkman is Vocollect’s flagship range and this latest offering meets the objectives of their product strategy. Capturing 10% of their overall terminal sales in the first year it is on target to represent 20% in year 2.
Talkman®T5 has been well accepted in the market, allowing Vocollect to maintain sales in their traditional terminal areas but yet offering advanced features and smaller form factors where demanded by premium markets.
