Challenge
Datalogic, Europe’s foremost producer of barcode readers and portable data terminals asked PDD to develop its new range of pistol grip ‘mobile@work’ products. The focus was to improve the ergonomics, provide a larger display and ensure class-leading ruggedness to withstand the harsh environments of use.
Solution
PDD made best use of the large screen and spacious keyboard to improve the user interface; structural engineering of the caseworks reduced weight and the sculpted form was driven by ergonomic considerations. Early prototypes with internalized antenna and new sealing details verified theoretical rugged performance (1.8m impact and IP65 protection) before PDD made a batch of fully functional prototypes for customer field trials.
Result
The Viper terminal provides excellent usability in harsh environments, where mobility, reliability and robustness are prerequisites.
