11.02.10 Mobile phone crime prevention device designed by PDD is unveiled.

i-migo, a mobile phone crime prevention device designed by PDD is unveiled to the media.

PDD and DT&C were joint winners of the ‘Design Crime Out’ competition run by the Design Council and the Home Office Design and Technology Alliance.

In conjunction with its client DT&C, and SVEP a technology partner, PDD developed "i-migo", a small personal device, to reduce mobile phone theft and data loss. I-migo sounds an alarm and locks the handset if it is taken out of Bluetooth range of the phone.  It also provides automated backup of data stored on the phone.

PDD was responsible for the insight research, industrial and interaction design and mechanical engineering of i-migo.

Fully working i-migo prototypes will be on display from 15th–18th February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Home Office Minister Alan Campbell said:

‘Overall crime has fallen since 1997 but as new technology creates new opportunities for the user it can also provide criminals with opportunities as well.  This is where designing out crime can make a real difference and we are leading the way by using technology to protect the public.

I believe the solutions developed by this challenge have the potential to be as successful as previous innovations like Chip and Pin, which reduced fraud on lost or stolen cards to an all time low,  and would encourage industry to continue working with us and take them up.’
