08.04.10 Paper launched on patient - centred innovation in medical device design

Human Factors team at PDD have published a paper on patient - centred innovation in medical device design.

A version of this paper was first presented by PDD at the 2009 European Pharmaceutical Market Research Association (EphMRA) Annual Conference in Paris.

Abstract

For many years, design has been used by pharmaceutical companies to differentiate their products and gain a greater share of the marketplace. However, as more and more companies begin to saturate this space, there is a need for pharmaceutical companies, designers and researchers to broaden their outlook beyond the production of functional and usable devices. Designers and researchers within commercial product design have for some time, utilised a broad array of research skills and creative techniques to uncover more of the unarticulated and unmet needs of their consumers. In this paper, a number of case studies are used to show how applying such methods within medical device development is kick-starting innovation, identifying new product opportunities and improving the lives of patients.
